Reading and Conferences

After a string of unfortunate terms of reading and conferences that did not work out as well as expected, I have decided to institute the following policies:

• It is the responsibility of the student to propose a reading list for a reading and conference.
• The reading list must be proposed, in writing, and approved prior to the start of the term.
• It is the students reponsibility to provide periodic reports on progress, questions, and comments. These can be communicated via e-mail or in person, at least once every two weeks.
• A final report must be provided by the end of the term. This report should include a bibliography of the items read, as well as a summary that unifies and analyzes the material.
• Even when the student is willing to agree to these terms, I still reserve the option of refusing to sponsor a reading and conference course. My teaching load varies from term to term, and some terms I simply do not have time to supervise additional students.
