6. Team or Collaborative Efforts

I have served as the Project Director of two multi-year, cross-departmental grants  -- the Society of Manufacturing Engineers Education Foundation Grant (SME-EF) and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation Engineering Schools of the West Initiative Grant (HF ESWI).  Both of these grants had a substantial component related to curriculum and program development.  In these roles, I have coordinated curriculum development, research, and laboratory development activities impacting multiple departments within and outside of the College of Engineering.

As a result of the SME-EF work, three courses were substantially revised and three new courses were developed and continue to be offered as part of the curriculum available to engineering students at OSU.  My role on this project was to coordinate the efforts of the various faculty involved on the project, to develop curriculum and labs for 2 of the courses, and to manage the overall project (including timeline, scope, and budget).  The project was evaluated by the granting agency as a success and was highlighted at a SME-EF Board meeting, where I gave a presentation on the overall project.

I have also been the director/project manager for the HF ESWI program.  Similar to the SME-EF Grant, I have been responsible for managing the all aspects of this project.  The scope was significant as we have involved faculty from the College of Engineering (COE) as well as the College of Science (COS) at OSU in this effort.  In addition, faculty from nearly all departments in COE have been involved in this effort.  At a technical level, I have led efforts to develop and use assessment methodologies to evaluate the impact of the curriculum innovations funded by this grant.  I also led a follow-on project to complete a benchmarking study of three engineering programs (University of Washington, Purdue University, and Virginia Tech) and to develop a set of recommendations for OSU COE regarding undergraduate retention.  I was responsible for developing the research tools and data collection protocol. I also trained other members of the team to collect and code the data from the study.  A complete report of the results and a summary list of recommendations were developed and presented to the leadership of COE.  These recommendations are now being implemented, including a recent COE-wide offering of department open houses.

I chaired the 2008 ABET accreditation effort for all three programs in our school (Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering).  I developed common processes for tracking, assessing, and evaluating Program Educational Objectives, Program Outcomes, and Course Learning Outcomes.
