Course Objectives

Spring term, I'll be teaching CS 589 (Special Topics in Programming Languages). Although this is in the programming language series, a lot of student researchers need HCI training, so I'm going to use the special topics course as a vehicle to provide it. The course will thus be a general HCI course, although we'll emphasize HCI issues that are particularly relevant in programming and in other similar types of intensive problem solving.

The course will be done as a "clinic". We will learn HCI basics, and our primary learning vehicle will be to provide "clinical services" to anyone who has HCI issues they need help on. Students will work in teams to help find answers to these issues.

I have collected 6-7 "client" projects from interested parties. There is still time for more to be contributed, and even enrolled students can contribute them if they want, but I need to hear no later than March 31 of any additional client projects people might want to contribute.

Prerequisites

The only prerequisite for this course is grad standing in Computer Science.

Basic Structure of the Course

During the first week of class, you'll form teams, and each team will "adopt" on of these client projects. Most of the assignments will be in the context of the client project you've adopted. By the end of the term, you'll have performed a number of types of evaluation on this project, and will have a well-substantiated list of recommendations to give to the sponsor who actually owns the client project.

Your grade will be computed from:

Note that there is no final exam in this class. There is also no programming. The emphases are on design and evaluation of HCI aspects.

Final grades are up.
