Summer School in Data Mining & Machine Learning for Professionals
Sponsored by: Center for Automated Learning and Discovery, Carnegie
Mellon University

Dates: June 14-18, 1999
Times: 9:00-5:00
Location: University Center, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, USA

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Data mining / machine learning practitioners. A B.Sc.
degree in a Math/Science discipline is recommended (e.g., Computer Science,
Statistics, Engineering, Chemistry, etc.)

BENEFITS TO PARTICIPANTS:
Exposure to state-of-the-art concepts in machine learning; hands-on labs
with modern tools of data mining. Specifically, the course will start with
a brief but comprehensive introduction to the fundamental ideas and
algorithms in data mining and machine learning. It will then continue with
advanced topics (massive datasets, planning, privacy, multimedia). A strong
feature is the hands-on labs with state-of-the-art software tools:
participants will apply them to large datasets that the instructors will
provide, or, optionally, to their own datasets. Finally, there will be
group discussions, brainstorming sessions, and close interactions with CMU
faculty, focusing on problems of interest to the participants.
