CALL FOR PAPERS Int. Workshop on the Foundations of Spreadsheets (FOS'04) http://eecs.oregonstate.edu/~erwig/FOS/ Rome, Italy September 30, 2004 to be held in conjunction with the: IEEE Symposium on Visual Languages and Human-Centric Computing (VL/HCC'04), Rome, Italy, September 26-29, 2004 (http://vlhcc04.dsi.uniroma1.it) ------------------------------------ Important dates ------------------------------------ * Submission: June 20, 2004 * Notification: July 18, 2004 * Final Version: August 31, 2004 ------------------------------------ Scope ------------------------------------ Spreadsheets are among the most used software packages. Spreadsheets are used in many different application areas by many people, most of whom are not professional programmers or computer scientists. Numerous studies have shown that existing spreadsheets contain errors at an alarmingly high rate. Therefore, knowledge about the use and users of spreadsheets as well as tools and techniques that can improve the creation and maintenance of spreadsheets are in great demand. This workshop is concerned with all aspects that affect the effective use of spreadsheet systems. We invite you to submit papers that help to identify ways to improve the currently unsatisfactory situation of spreadsheet programming. ------------------------------------ Topics of interest ------------------------------------ Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following. From an HCI and empirical point of view: * Studies on how spreadsheets are created * Studies on categories of errors and their frequency * Studies on the usability of spreadsheets * Studies on what spreadsheet features are used in practice From a software engineering point of view: * Design methods for spreadsheets * Testing of spreadsheets * Spreadsheet auditing * Spreadsheet reuse * Spreadsheet maintenance From a theoretical point of view: * Formal models of spreadsheets * Type systems for spreadsheets * Notions of spreadsheet correctness * New spreadsheet languages * Support for abstraction in spreadsheets ------------------------------------ Paper Submission and Publication ------------------------------------ Authors are invited to submit papers in PDF format. Papers should be 10 - 15 pages long. Keeping in mind the ENTCS post-workshop publication, submitted papers should be formatted following the ENTCS formatting instructions. Submission should be sent by email to erwig@cs.orst.edu. The deadline for sumbitting papers is June 20, 2004. Accepted papers will be published in the workshop proceedings that will be distributed at the workshop. After the workshop all accepted and presented papers will be published in the Electronic Notes in Theoretical Computer Science (ENTCS). ------------------------------------ Program Committee ------------------------------------ Alan Blackwell, University of Cambridge, UK Margaret Burnett, Oregon State University, USA Martin Erwig, Oregon State University, USA (chair) Shriram Krishnamurthi, Brown University, USA Clayton Lewis, University of Colorado, USA Simon Peyton Jones, Microsoft Research, Cambridge, UK Jorma Sajaniemi, University of Joensuu, Finland Susan Wiedenbeck, Drexel University, USA
