Professor Miller's structural engineering and structural mechanics research interests include earthquake engineering, timber structures, cold-formed steel structures and bridges. Recent research projects involve seismic hazard assessment of public buildings in Oregon and modeling and behavior of residential timber structures.

He teaches graduate and undergraduate structural engineering and engineering mechanics courses at Oregon State University in structural analysis, steel design, seismic design, structural dynamics, structural stability, and statics.

Tom Miller is also faculty advisor to the student chapters of the American Society of Civil Engineers and Earthquake Engineering Research Institute. He is a member of the Faculty and Staff Christian Fellowship on campus, and serves as the advisor to the Christian Graduate Fellowship, both of which emphasize the connections between faith in Jesus Christ and life in the university.
