CS 553 -- Spring Quarter 2019

Data Project: Roll Your Own Scientific Data Visualization

100 Points

Due: June 9 No Bonus Days

This page was last updated: May 10, 2019

This project is for 553ers only. 453ers are free to do it, but it won't count for anything.

Scenario:

Find your own scientific data. If you find some and have any questions about it being appropriate enough, come see me before you get too far in working with it.

Come up with an insightful way to visualize it.

This can be done with ParaView, an OpenGL program, or both.

Beware of the takes-a-full-week-to-figure-out-how-to-read-the-damn-data syndrome! :-)

Requirements:

  1. There must be some insight that comes out of this project. That is, it is not enough to just draw a few pictures and call it a day. What is this data? What are your pictures telling you about the data?

The Turn-in:

Your turn-in will be a PDF report:

  1. The images that you have produced
  2. A link to a video showing interacting with the data
  3. What insights did you gain from doing this?
  4. Tell me about your data! What is it? Where did it come from? What are using it to show?

You do need to create a video for this project.
