Obtaining Tcl7.3/Tk3.6, gunzip, and gcc

Obtaining Tcl/Tk

Tcl (tool command language) is a scripting language and Tk is a graphical user interface toolkit based on Tcl. Both packages are freely available. Click here for general information on Tcl/Tk. To download the versions of Tcl/Tk which MCF requires via ftp:
  1. Establish anonymous FTP connection to ftp.smli.com:
    	Prompt> ftp ftp.smli.com
  2. When prompted for your name, type anonymous:
    	Name (ftp.smli.com:username): anonymous
  3. When prompted for a password, type your email address:
Guest login ok, send your complete e-mail address as password.
    	Password: user's e-mail address
  4. Retrieve the relevant files with the following commands:
    	ftp> binary
    	ftp> cd pub/tcl
    	ftp> get README
    	ftp> get tcl7.3.tar.Z
    	ftp> get tk3.6.tar.Z
    	ftp> quit
Be sure to retrieve files in binary mode so that you end up with uncorrupted files.

  5. Place tcl7.3.tar.Z in the directory where you want to install it, then uncompress and untar it:
    	Prompt> zcat tcl7.3.tar.Z | tar -xf
  6. Likewise for tk3.6.tar.Z:
    	Prompt> zcat tk3.6.tar.Z | tar -xf
  7. See the two README files, in the top-level directories of these two software relesaes. They describe how to compile the release, where to find documentation, etc. You may need gcc (version 2.5.2 or later) to compile the Tcl/Tk software. If you need to obtaing gcc, you will also need to obtain gunzip in order to uncompress the gcc-2.7.2.tar.gz tar file (or whatever version you choose). The .gz file extension means that this file was compressed with the GNU portable compression standard gzip.

Obtaining gunzip and gcc

  1. You can obtain the files gzip-1.2.4.tar and gcc-2.7.2.tar.gz from the prep.ai.mit.edu anonymous FTP site:

    	Name (ftp.smli.com:username): anonymous
    	Password: user's e-mail address
    	ftp> binary
