PhD graduate fellowship for 2008 in Machine Learning Ecology
Seeking a Computer Science or Statistics student who is interested in applying machine learning techniques to problems related to species distribution and biodiversity.
One Ph.D. fellowship is available in the IGERT Ecosystem Informatics Program at Oregon State University starting in October 2008. The focus of this research project is to develop novel species distribution models using techniques from machine learning and data mining. The fellowship includes $60,000 over 4 years and tuition and fees for 2 years as well as a research allowance.
Applicants should be seeking a PhD in Computer Science or a closely related field, or already hold undergraduate or MS degrees in a relevant discipline. In addition to a strong interest in data mining, applicants should have the following qualifications: (1) strong mathematical background including linear algebra, calculus and discrete math (2) familiarity with statistical packages (such as R or Matlab) (3) proficiency in C++ and/or Java (4) an excellent academic background (see IGERT requirements). Experience in machine learning, particularly graphical models, and spatial statistics is preferred but not required. Applicants must be U.S. Citizens or U.S. permanent residents.
Application information for the IGERT Ecosystem Informatics program can be found at: http://ecoinformatics.oregonstate.edu/new/apply.html
Preference will be given to applications received by Feb 1, 2008. Interested persons should email Dr. Weng-Keen Wong.
