Dr. Yim graduated from Rice University (Houston, TX) in 1976 with a BS degree in Civil Engineering with the highest honor(Summa Cum Laude). He then attended the University of California at Berkeley and received his MS (1977) and PhD (1983) in Structural Engineering and Structural Mechanics in addition to a MA degree in Mathematics (1981). The focuses of his M.A. and Ph.D. were on computational fluid dynamics, and nonlinear structure-foundation interaction, respectively. Prior to completion of his Ph.D. degree in 1983, Dr. Yim taught structural mechanics, analysis and design at Berkeley as Acting Instructor. Upon graduation, he continued teaching as a Visiting Lecturer and research in nonlinear structure-foundation interaction as a Research Engineer in 1983-84. Dr. Yim joined Exxon Production Research Company as a Research Engineer in 1984 and was a Senior Research Engineer in 1985-87. He was the primary researcher of several projects including vortex-induced vibration of flexible risers; field and laboratory instrumentation, testing and data analysis of floating production systems; and development of probability-based design methodology for fluid-structure interaction systems. Dr. Yim has been with Oregon State University since 1987 as Assistant Professor (1987-91), Associate Professor (1991-97), and Professor (1997-present). He was also Assistant Department Head in 1998-00 and Director of Transportation Research Institute in 1999-02. His research interests include deterministic and stochastic computational structural and fluid mechanics; modeling, analysis, simulation, and design of nonlinear structure-fluid-soil interaction systems; with applications in structural, naval, coastal, ocean and earthquake engineering. At Rice University, Dr. Yim received several awards including the George Brown Engineering Scholarship (1973-76), Mary Parker Gieske Scholarship (1974-75), and the Herman Blum Scholarship (1975-76) and was selected members of Tau Beta Pi (1975) and Phi Beta Kappa (1976). At the University of California, he received the Earle Anthony University Graduate Fellowship (1976-77) and the William & Helena Popert Fellowship (1977-79) and was selected member of Xi Epsilon (1977). At Oregon State University, Dr. Yim received several research awards including the US Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award (1988-91) and the Oregon State University College of Engineering Research Leadership Award (2002). He was also selected US Navy/ASEE Senior Research Fellow in 1993 and Royal Norwegian Research Council Senior Visiting Research Scientist in 1994. Dr. Yim was a Visiting Associate Professor at the University of California at Berkeley in 1993-94. He is listed in several Who's Who publications including Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in America, and the International Directory of Distinguished Leadership. Dr. Yim is a member of many professional technical committees in the ASCE, ASME, ISOPE, EERI, PEER and NEES Consortium. He served on the State of Oregon Governor's Task Force on Shear-Cracked Bridges in 2002. He is a co-chair of the Task Committee on Storm Surge and Tsunamis of the US-Japan Natural Resources Panel on Wind and Seismic Effects (2003-present). Dr. Yim served on the CUREE Board of Director in 2000-02 and is a member of the Board of the NSF NEES Consortium (2003-present). He has been a member of the Editorial Board of the ASCE Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal and Ocean Engineering Division since 1996 and an Associate Editor of the ASME Journal of Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering since 2000. Dr. Yim has organized or participated in the organization of a number of conferences, workshops and short courses. He is also a reviewer of a number of technical journals and international, federal and state funding agencies.
