This National Academy of Construction initiative is supported by four leading universities, industry organizations, and the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine.
The National Academy of Construction (NAC) and Oregon State University (OSU) invite design and construction industry leaders to join faculty from their local region and nationally to discuss safety in industry and undergraduate engineering programs and the importance of safety culture.

It is widely known that when an excellent safety culture is developed, dramatically reduced safety incidents and outstanding safety performance result. Most college undergraduates, however, are not exposed to instruction and activities on safety and safety culture in their academic programs. This symposium is one of a series of five symposia being held around the US to help enhance safety culture in undergraduate engineering programs and create and sustain a culture of safety across the industry.

Best practices and lessons learned from the first symposia series will be incorporated into the discussions. The proceedings from the new symposia series will be published and publicly available.
In 2022-2023, the NAC conducted its first symposia series on creating safety culture concepts in undergraduate education. The series illustrated how educators and industry can introduce safety culture concepts to undergraduates in construction- and engineering-related programs. Successes in this area are now being seen.
