Personal Statements
Sustainability Impact Statement
My personal goals for sustainability have shifted greatly since I became a student at OSU. Since participating in the ENGR 100 and ENGR 102 courses here, I have become more aware of the impact my decisions have on the environment. Because of this, it is my goal to maintain that the projects that I work on both in and outside of OSU are environmentally conscious and sustainable. As a programmer, I will learn to make my code efficient and apply it in a way that is sustainable. I will also continue to seek opportunities by selecting classes that focus on sustainability and bringing discussion about sustainability to the clubs and groups I am currently a part of. By keeping with these practices, I can lead by example within the communities I am involved in. This would not only help me to inform others on the importance of sustainability, but it would also prepare me for a career as many industries are looking for ways to become sustainable. My plan would fall in line with the COE’s goals for becoming a recognized model as a collaborative community, creating graduates that drive change, and lead research and innovation to change the world. I would also be promoting OSU’s goal of promoting environmental progress for the people of Oregon, the nation, and the world. To meet this goal, I would have to become a skilled critical thinker, who actively searches for new knowledge and solutions while developing and assisting the next generation of scholars. I will also collaborate with communities in Oregon while maintaining my focus on academic excellence.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement
Currently, America is facing many challenges with regards to diversity, equity, and inclusivity. It is my belief that the best way to change this is not with government policy change, but with fundamental cultural change. I have many personal goals related to this topic that I hope will promote these core values. One very important area that I plan to seek change in, is within my fraternity. As our chapter is new on campus this year, we have a lot of opportunities to create an inclusive environment for all ethnicities and cultures. I also plan to apply this to my bible study group as I am currently working to expand the organization. Promoting diversity in the areas of race, ethnicity, and gender within the group is my long-term goal. By increasing representation within these groups, I hope we can be a success story to others so they might seriously consider diversity, equity and inclusion within their associations. My goals align with the COE’s goal of becoming a recognized model as an inclusive and collaborative community, as well as their goal of establishing the COE as the partner of choice for industry, government, and academia. My goals also align with OSU’s mission statement of being committed to promoting economic, social, and cultural progress for the people of Oregon, the nation, and the world. It is my hope that through my greek life and my religion, I will be able to entice others to become a part of diverse and inclusive communities to insight mass cultural change.
