Description:
The Concurrent Design of Products. This course focuses on the concurrent design of mechanical products. Concurrent design requires the systematic communication of information across the entire product development and manufacturing enterprise. The success of this communication is dependent on understanding the structure of the information that characterizes the product and the design process. In this course we will develop this structure and methods to enable concurrent design. These methods include quality function deployment (QFD), functional modeling, design for assembly (DFA), parametric design and others.
Texts:
The Mechanical Design Process, Ullman 1992, McGraw Hill.
Material on Web site www.engr.orst.edu/~ullman/518
Homework:
Due the Monday following the assignment at the beginning of class (assignment for week 1 is due on Monday 1/10).
Report Assignments: Part of your grade in this course will be a 20+ page report on any topic related to concurrent engineering. This report must contain at least 15 references from the literature. To be used as a reference means that the paper or section of the book referenced must have been read. Each week, along with your other homework, you must turn in at least one paragraph on at least one reference. These will not be graded. They are for me to insure you are on a reasonable track. The report must be 1 1/2 spaced text with 12 point font. The text should not be just a series of paraphrases of the material, but must synthesize the material into a single unit.
Grading:
20% Homework
50% Report
30% Final
