Dr. Armin W. Stuedlein, P.E. (WA), F.ASCE is a Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at Oregon State University in the
School of Civil and Construction Engineering (CCE). Dr. Stuedlein received his Master's Degree from Syracuse University in 2003 and Ph.D. from The University of Washington in December of 2008 in Civil Engineering (Geotechnical).
Dr. Stuedlein joined OSU in 2009 after working in a full-time, concurrent position as a consultant for Seattle-based geotechnical firms (Hart Crowser, Inc., 2004-2008;
Shannon & Wilson, Inc., 2008-2009), and is a licensed professional engineer in the State of Washington.
His primary research interests center on the full-scale performance and behavior of geotechnical materials and infrastructure subject to soil-structure interaction, including the earthquake-induced liquefaction/cyclic softening responses of soils in-situ and in the laboratory, deep and shallow foundations, and ground improvements.
His approach combines the evaluation of instrumented soils and structures with lab-based soil testing, numerical modeling, and statistical methods to better understand geotechnical performance, with a particular view of assessing and incorporating the spatial variability of soil deposits.
Dr. Stuedlein incorporates his research and consulting experience into the classroom, where he teaches undergraduate soil mechanics, and graduate level courses in a range of topics. Professor Stuedlein is Editor of the ASCE Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, Editor of the Journal of the Deep Foundations Institute, and serves on the Editorial Boards of the Canadian Geotechnical Journal and Georisk.
Dr. Stuedlein has earned a number of awards, most recently the 2023 ASCE J. James R. Croes Medal and the 2023 Fredlund Award.
He is Vice Chair of the Geo-Institute Soil Improvement Committee, and co-edited a number of GeoCongress proceedings. He was elected Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2023 for his contributions to the field.
