Workshop description

The serious problems in environmental protection, management and
research can be addressed by effective use of comprehensive and
reliable environmental data. These data are gathered in various forms
and can be coming from various sources. A characteristic of
environmental data is their spatial and temporal dimension common
to most environment problems. Analysis of environmental data can
lead to effective modelling and understanding of complex environmental
processes and eventually, the solution of our urgent
environmental problems.
This workshop is concentrated on state-of-the-art techniques for
spatial and temporal data analysis in the context of environmental
problem solving. Spatial and/or temporal data analysis can be applied to
environmental data of various complex real-world problems involving for
instance large multisource temporal databases that may include remotely
sensed data (e.g. multispectral satellite images, airborne data), grid
data and point/local measurements.
Efficient techniques used for the analysis of such data are of great
value in many environmental problems as for environmental prevention,
monitoring and assessment of natural disasters.
This workshop is focused on the use of intelligent techniques such as
neural networks, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms and decision trees, for
environmental monitoring and/or extracting information relevant to the
environment from spatio-temporal data. The goal is the presentation of
state-of-the-art research results and practice on the above domains
based on a theoretical as well as on an application oriented
framework.
Original, high-quality contributions are invited to be presented and
discussed during this research meeting. Participants of different
backgrounds will be familiarized with the fields of spatio-temporal
data analysis using intelligent techniques and will gain insight into
the emerging field of environmental informatics.

Interested authors are requested to submit a paper, of no more than
10 pages, before *** 26 March 1999 *** Authors of accepted papers
will be asked to provide a camera-ready version of their paper
before 20 April 1999.
The Workshop Proceedings will be published in collaboration
with the ACAI-99 organization committee.

Organizational Issues:

The workshop will take place on Tuesday, July 13, during the
afternoon session (14:30-18:00) of ACAI-99.
Anyone registered for the main ACAI-99 event can also attend
all the workshops. For the workshop participants who will not be
registered for the whole ACAI-99 there will be a fee of 100 Euros.
