Modeling and Simulation of Nonlinear Dynamic Response of Marine Platforms in Shallow Water and Surf Zone

Solomon Yim, PI

We examine the nonlinear coupled fluid-structure interaction characteristics of rigid and deformable structures of various sizes in shallow water and the surf zone. These structures include moored or free-floating platforms, barges, UUVs, AUVs, mines, etc.

2D Morison formulation with a moored buoy in sinusoid waves - chaotic motions.

2D Fully-Nonlinear Potential Flow formulation with a moored buoy with period piston wave maker motion excitation (in collaboration with Dr. Katsuji Tanizawa of NMRI Japan) - subharmonic response.

2D Fluid-Structure Interaction Simulation (in collaboration with Prof. Philip Liu of Cornell University USA) - moored buoy and RANS/k-e closure fluid model.

3D fluid interacting with two flexible cylinders (dam-break excitation) using LS-DYNA model.

3D fluid interacting with two flexible cylinders (wave generator motion excitation) using LS-DYNA model.
