Statistical Modelling for Data Mining Conference
SmDM-2000
October 25th - 26th, 2000 - Pavia, Italy
http://www.baystat.it/pv2000en/indice.htm
Data mining has gained recognition as an important tool for business
and industry. The added value of information, albeit uncertain, gleaned
from huge databases of past transactions allows more focussed decision
making. In particular, this wealth of information allows customer
relationship management to be specifically targetted to individuals.
The standard procedures, embodied in state-of-the-art data mining
softwares,
have drawn heavily from statistical methods and routines including
regression,
classification, clustering, data reduction, neural nets. But, this
approach,
while a preliminary necessity to an exploration of the data, is limited.
Stochastic models and statistical inference have an important role to play
in
data mining. This workshop elucidates the contributions, actual and
potential,
coming from a more formal treatment of data analysis.
The workshop consists of tutorial talks by leading international experts,
in
the morning, and discussion of case studies presented by qualified italian
companies.
