Optional Training Opportunities (Great professional development opportunities!)
This self-paced course is designed for instructors who are new to online teaching; it can fulfill the training requirement for faculty teaching Ecampus sections for the first time who are not able to attend New Instructor Training. The workshop provides insight into who our Ecampus distance learners are and their needs; strategies and tips for effective online teaching; and information about services and support for Ecampus faculty and students. If you've never taken an online course before, this will also give you a chance to sample online learning in Canvas from the student's perspective.
This three-week, online workshop will introduce you to tools and techniques that can be used in an online course to ensure students are fully involved in the learning process. It will emphasize research-based teaching strategies that will positively impact your students' experiences in the online classroom.
The workshop will demonstrate how you can engage students in three ways: student-to-content, student-to-instructor, and student-to-student. The time commitment for this class is approximately nine hours of asynchronous learning over three weeks.
Teaching Online – Pedagogy Seminars (TOPS) will re-energize and invigorate your continuing work as a higher education online instructor while only requiring 30 minutes of your time! These virtual seminars provide a space for advanced and expert online faculty to learn about, discuss, and consider practical applications for emerging strategies and ideas in online teaching and learning.
Each meeting will tackle an area of interest, opening with a micro-presentation to provide context, and then transitioning to group discussion, collaborative resource sharing, and reflection on how this discussion might prompt changes in your teaching — tomorrow, next week, next term. Attend one or all, and join a supportive community of advanced online learning professionals who have a shared interest in exploring what we do, why, and new ideas for supporting our online students' success.
This seven-week applied workshop will help you to learn how to teach inclusively online. If you have ever wondered how you could better reach and support students with diverse identities, backgrounds and needs in your online classes, this workshop will introduce you to evidence-based and practical tools and strategies for developing an inclusive climate, understanding online student needs and getting to know online students, and effectively facilitating dialogue and discussion online — including challenging topics of conversation.
In this workshop, you will learn about best practices for creating a mid-term course survey (and the benefits of having one) and then will create a Qualtrics survey and link it to a Canvas assignment.
Quality Matters Training Opportunities
Register for all QM courses through our Ecampus QM liaison. Do not register directly on the QM site, unless specifically instructed to do so.
Having your course peer reviewed and approved for QM Certification will earn you an additional stipend. Discuss your interest in a QM Review with the CDM.
This two-hour DIY Course Design Bootcamp provides opportunities to learn crucial decision-making approaches to (re)design a course, such as working backwards. Leave prepared to start the (re)design of a course after thinking about its alignment of learning outcomes, assessments, and learning activities!
Quality Teaching Talks (QT Talks) has an important update to share as we approach the final session of the year. Tomorrow's session will feature a change as we will discuss trauma-informed teaching practices to help our students affected by major global events such as the pandemic and university pro-Palestinian protests as well as personal situations that make learning difficult. We will have an open dialogue on ways we can support our students and ourselves during these challenging times.
